Most people have heard of Mill Hollow and perhaps Cooper’s Hollow. Less familiar are Peaseley Hollow and Swift’s Hollow, all located along the scenic Vermilion River.

Swift’s Hollow takes its name from Joseph Swift, one of Brownhelm Township’s earliest settlers, who arrived in 1817. Swift transformed more than 400 acres of wilderness into a thriving farm. As his success grew, he built an impressive home that still stands as one of Lorain County’s most remarkable historic structures.

An architectural anomaly tucked away in the rural countryside of Lorain County, the Swift Homestead is among the most thoroughly documented historic buildings in Ohio. This presentation will explore the history of Swift’s Hollow, the life and accomplishments of Joseph Swift, and the lasting legacy of his farm and homestead.

About the Presenter

Grant Thompson is a lifelong resident of Lorain County who grew up in Amherst. A graduate of Marion L. Steele High School and Miami University, Grant worked for the Lorain County Metro Parks for more than 31 years. In retirement, he serves as a trustee for both the Brownhelm Historical Association and the Lorain County Historical Society. He is also an active participant with the Western Reserve Land Conservancy. Grant currently resides in Amherst.
