The Amherst Historical Society, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, was founded in 1973, with the first organized meeting held on April 10, 1973. The Society became accredited in 1990 by the Ohio Association of Historical Societies and Museums (OAHSM).

This year, the Amherst Historical Society celebrates 53 years, and its founding has a meaningful connection to the Amherst Public Library, which celebrates 120 years. Vivienne R. Bickley, who compiled a history of the Amherst Historical Society in 1998, wrote:

“Elna Wittenbrook, who was then Head Librarian at our Public Library, felt it was time that Amherst had an historical society. This was because she had accumulated enough artifacts from various donors to warrant another place to keep them other than the library. People around town were called to a meeting to see if the idea was feasible. The first organized meeting was on April 10, 1973. Robert Lauer presided, Elna served as Vice President, and Vivienne Bickley was Secretary-Treasurer.”

Colonel Raymon Vietzen gave the first program, presenting slides and speaking about local Native Americans. Within several months, membership grew to 100, and it was decided that the first 100 would be recognized as charter members.
