Discover the extraordinary story of one of Ohio’s overlooked Civil War heroes: Wells Waite Miller of the 8th OVI. Miller was a student in Oberlin during the famed Oberlin–Wellington Slave Rescue, fought at Antietam’s Bloody Lane, and later oversaw hundreds of captured Confederate soldiers.
After being captured himself and sent to Camp Parole, Miller returned to battle and led a daring mini‑charge within Pickett’s Charge at Gettysburg, nearly losing his life. In later years, he became the long‑serving Secretary of the Ohio Department of Agriculture.
Our presenter, Kelly Boyer Sagert, is a long-time Lorain-based writer who spent seven years researching and writing Wells Waite Miller and Me: An 8th OVI Civil War Biography. During her work, she uncovered remarkable synchronicities between her own life and Miller’s, developing friendships with many of Miller’s descendants.
