In the early days of our region’s settlement, many family burial plots dotted the landscape—later absorbed into larger cemeteries or forgotten entirely. One such site is the Claus Family Cemetery in Brownhelm. For years, two lone white marble headstones stood quietly on a hillside overlooking a small creek and the bustling State Route 6.

Local historian Matt Nahorn, intrigued by these quiet sentinels of the past, knew there was a story waiting to be uncovered. That story led to a heartfelt restoration project, spearheaded by Matt and supported by Kate Rivet and the Cemetery Restoration Services team, including Jane and Ron Crandall.
